Astrid Köppe: Pretty Shiny Stuff
German artist Astrid Köppe’s first full-color catalogue, Pretty Shiny Stuff, surveys over 90 of her daily drawings. These single-format works feature biomorphic shapes meticulously rendered at the center of vertical white paper. Created with mechanical pencils and watercolor, the drawings recall illustrations from pre-photography botanical and medical textbooks, while also evoking industrial design and classic science-fiction imagery. Just as the strange forms begin to feel familiar, they slip away—resisting clear categorization. Köppe intentionally embeds riddles within each work, inviting prolonged looking.
The catalogue also includes 15 vitreous-enamel works on steel plates, inspired by the drawings.
